What You Should Know Before the Egg Retrieval (OPU) Procedure

The egg retrieval procedure is an exciting yet relatively simple stage of the IVF process. Here is a short guide to help you understand it and feel more at ease.

One of the most common questions our patients have at this stage of IVF treatment is how the egg retrieval procedure is performed and what to expect afterward.

In reality, this process is not as difficult as it may seem. The procedure is quick, usually painless, and most patients can return to their normal activities on the same day.

About the Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Pick-Up – OPU) procedure

Egg retrieval is an important step performed before moving to the laboratory phase of IVF. This procedure collects mature eggs and prepares them for fertilization.

How the procedure is performed

Egg retrieval is done vaginally under ultrasound guidance using a thin needle. Before the procedure, the patient receives short-term intravenous sedation (light anesthesia), so that no pain or discomfort is felt. The procedure typically takes about 10–15 minutes.

After the procedure

The patient is monitored in a recovery room for approximately 1–2 hours before being discharged. Mild abdominal discomfort, tenderness or bloating may occur afterwards and usually resolves on its own within 1–2 days.

Important considerations

Driving on the day of the procedure is not recommended.
Drink plenty of fluids and keep to light meals.
Contact the clinic if severe abdominal pain, excessive bloating, nausea or fever occurs.

Conclusion

Egg retrieval is a short, safe and generally painless procedure. Most patients are able to resume their daily activities on the same day.
