Egg Donation

Egg Donation

Egg donation, also referred to as egg transfer or egg gifting, is a procedure in which eggs used in IVF treatment are obtained from a healthy donor.

What is egg donation?

Egg donation, also known as egg transfer or egg gifting, is a process in which eggs are obtained from a healthy woman other than the intended mother for use in IVF treatment. This method is particularly suitable for women with ovarian insufficiency or those who wish to have children at an advanced age. In Cyprus, egg donation is legally permitted, and Cyprus is one of the most experienced countries in this field.

The success rate of IVF with egg donation is generally around 85%. Factors influencing success include maternal age, uterine health, sperm quality and overall health.

Who can benefit from egg donation?

Women with ovaries but no egg production
Women who have had their ovaries surgically removed
Women with poor egg quality in previous IVF attempts
Women experiencing premature menopause
Couples with multiple failed IVF attempts
Women whose ovaries were damaged due to chemotherapy or radiation
Women carrying genetic disorders or at risk of recurrent miscarriage
Women with reduced ovarian function due to advanced age

Egg donor selection

Personal information of the donor and the recipient family is kept strictly confidential.

Age between 20–29 years
Preferably having had a previous healthy pregnancy
No use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs
Passing psychological and gynecological evaluations
No serious genetic or health conditions in family history

Treatment process

Ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval (OPU) — donor and recipient start treatment simultaneously
Uterine preparation — approximately 14–16 days before transfer
Sperm provision — collected on the OPU day, with 3–5 days of abstinence recommended, or frozen in advance
Embryo development and transfer — embryos are transferred on day 5 in a painless 10-minute procedure
Pregnancy test — a Beta-hCG test ten days after transfer

Genetic considerations

The baby's DNA comes from the egg donor and the father. Research suggests that the uterine environment can influence brain development, metabolism and the immune system, while mother–baby interaction supports overall child development.
